Matthias B. Lehmann is the Teller Family Chair in Jewish History at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of Ladino Rabbinic Literature and Ottoman Sephardic Culture (2005), Emissaries from the Holy Land (2014), co-author of The Jews: A History (2019), and co-editor of Jews and the Mediterranean (2020). He is currently finishing a biography of the nineteenth-century Jewish railroad entrepreneur and philanthropist, Baron Maurice de Hirsch.
