The Spitalfields Journey

August 1, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Commencing your journey with a visit to Britain’s oldest Synagogue in continuous use. The Grade One listed Bevis Marks houses a significant collection of ritual silver and textiles offering a rare insight into the ever changing fashions and craftsmanship of Spitalfields.

This highly valuable collection includes pieces by Huguenot silversmiths and dresses made of Huguenot silk which were re-made into mantels. A rare chance to witness a truly historic and cultural archive within such a captivating building.

From here you will be led to Dennis Severs’ House during which there will be time to talk about the area of Spitalfields and its indelible impact on the silk trade. An imagined family of Huguenot silk weavers are in residence at 18 Folgate Street seemingly always just out of sight. Enjoy a silent wander by candlelight around the 10 historic rooms spanning from 1724 – 1914.

As you progress floor by floor, room by room from the remnants of an evening well spent in the smoking room to the opulent collection of chinoiserie housed in the master bedroom to the dusty damp forgotten lodgings on the top floor you witness how the passage of time affects the silk trade from its early pomp to near collapse.

In order to preserve the quality of our carpets and floors, please refrain from wearing stiletto heels and shoes with deeply ridged soles.
