Join Rabbi Morris in conversation with Stanley Mirvis talking about “The Sephardic Caribbean: Plantations, Slavery, and Colony” .
In this talk Dr. Stanley Mirvis, Assistant Professor of history and the Harold and Jean Grossman Chair of Jewish Studies at Arizona State University, will discuss his anticipated new book: The Jews of Eighteenth-Century Jamaica: A Testamentary History of a Diaspora in Transition (Yale University Press: May 2020). Using last will and testaments, the book explores the development of a localized colonial identity for Jamaica’s Portuguese Jews while simultaneously belonging to a wider Portuguese Atlantic Diaspora. It further investigates the Jewish role in Caribbean planting and slave ownership as well as a Jewish path toward creolization.
